The Challenge

For over 25 years, Dave Hall has been helping people find better health and vitality by adding rebounding to their daily activities. Rebounding is a form of exercise that consists of bouncing, running, and jumping on a rebounder or mini trampoline. Dave has put years of experience and research into creating the Cellerciser® rebounder. The Cellerciser has a special mat and patented springs that make it the safest and most effective rebounder on the market. Dave has a true passion for helping people understand good health and creating healthy new habits. He had created dozens of exercises for the Cellerciser and he had a great app too, but his customers were asking for more. They wanted a device that would show them how long and how much they were bouncing on their Cellercisers and they wanted to know how many calories they were burning.

Analysis

Dave met with a Client Champion for a free consultation at QI Dynamics. The Client Champion listened to what Dave’s challenges were, what his customers were asking for and what his Cellerciser was all about. The Client Champion got the engineers involved and together they worked up a proposal for Dave. The proposal outlined Dave’s needs and set forth a plan to develop an electronic monitor for the Cellerciser.

Solution

The plan included three phases to get to the production of the new device. Phase 1 was the proof of concept. The engineers at QI Dynamics would create a rapid prototype to show the feasibility of the technology they were proposing and get some quick customer feedback. The customer feedback would be taken into account for the next phase which they called the Alpha phase. In the Alpha phase five completely functioning units would be designed and built. The electronics, the housing, the special sensor unit, and the decals would all be designed and fitted together. These units would be used for field testing and gauging customer acceptance. Everything learned in the Alpha phase would be considered for the final design phase which they called Beta. In the Beta phase the circuit board would get its final design adjustments and the molds for the custom enclosure would be created as well as the final decals and packaging; everything required for the product to go into production. At the end Dave would own the design and any patent rights. This was especially important to him because he was not only creating a new product, he was building his business. The engineers at QI Dynamics would provide drawings and explanations and Dave would work with a patent attorney to file for a utility patent.

Results

Now that the design is complete, QI Dynamics continues to support Dave by sourcing the parts and manufacturing Dave’s new electronic device, which he has named the “Play-In” Monitor. Dave continues to pursue his passion of helping people get and stay fit and now he has an electronic addition to his Cellerciser that boosts the enjoyment of his customers as well as sales.
